Fun Photos vs. Work Photos

The last couple of weeks have been a flurry of activity here in the Italian Dolomites, both personal and work. We have had a number of assignments around which we have spent time doing our own thing at the usual frantic summer pace; mountain running and cycling.

All our images get downloaded into a computer to an incoming folder, and from there they are separated into either a Work or Fun category. Fun being primarily from the iPhone or outtakes from photoshoots.Work is work; clean, sometimes produced, sometimes from the hip.

Today I began cleaning out the folders as we have processed the jobs and the workflow is complete. There, side by side, was two weeks of work vs. fun. Beyond the quality of the pixels themselves, I was happy to see that we have brought together everything we do, our work is much the same as what we do anyway. I thought it interesting to compare them.

  1. Spectacular stuff. Neat to see the work vs. fun photos. My favorite is the second one from the bottom, with the two hikers in the foreground walking under a rock outcropping. Great photos, man!

  2. Hiking through those beautiful places must have been a wonderful experience. Assuming this is not something you do often, I don’t doubt that you’ll remember an adventure like this for years to come.

  3. All amazing photos – work or fun regardless. I visited the Italian Dolomites a couple of years ago in summer time and they provided some of my favourite travel photos to date!

  4. Great shots – the comparison is interesting – especially with that third iPhone photo – at first glance, I’d think it’s from an SLR.

I might have to get an iPhone 4 after all in order to be a companion to my Nikon…

    1. Thanks to everyone who posted a comment, fun to read – hopefully our pics inspired.
What I learned was that it is not about the image quality, it is about the feel of the image that is most important – so no matter if you have an iPhone, a point and shoot or a big, expensive pro body, just make lots and lots of photos of what you enjoy and what inspires you.

  5. Nice photos! I especially like the close-up of Betsy (cow) lol but all the shots are beautiful 🙂

  6. Great photos!
I especially liked the 2nd and 3rd pictures from top. It’s because I enjoy how there is an athlete with the background of mountains.

  7. Dan & Janine: thought you’d like to know that your blog got ranked in the top 10 fastest growing WordPress blogs for today.
Happy Canada Day (from this side of the pond)!

  8. What amazing shots!! And scenery you do not associate with Italy more with Switzerland type of places….thanks for posting these!

  9. I lived in Italy and used to drive quite often on E45 Verona – Bolzano – Innsbruck but I didn’t know these beautiful mountains exist. The 6th and the 10th are really really amazing. These could be better than many postcards. Or are they postcards?

  10. I run myself and these photos really capture the beauty of running. Sometimes people don’t understand why people run, but these photos do a good job of showing how peaceful it really can be! Great job.

  11. Great photos!
The scenery is very beautiful. I would love to visit these places!
It’s interesting how you compared the fun photos vs work photos.

  12. They all look like fun photos to me! I very much enjoyed the shot of the cow and the guy eating – nice distortion from the wider angle there.

How did you get to shoot in croatia? I loved croatia while I was there, but I was there to lay on a boat and relax, not shoot. I’d probably prefer to be shooting though!

  13. Great shots. Photography is more within the eye of the camera holder – some see a photo and need to snap the picture, others just take pictures. Well done whether work or fun.
