The Cancer Recovery/COVID Road Trip, 2020
At the end of 2020, after a year of cancer treatment, Kim was given an all clear diagnosis. Weakened from chemo and radiation, she had still managed to run nearly every damn day during treatment, but was feeling relatively strong and extremely motivated for a return to the mountains. So, in December 2020, during the height of COVID, we set out on the road and returned to California’s Sierra Nevada to do a story for Patagonia’s The Cleanest Line that would have Kim tell her story about her return to the mountains after cancer. We knew living in the car at trailheads and running in the mountains was the best way to avoid people and focus on what we needed to do. While we were out, winter came in, snow blanketed the Sierra, and Kim’s hair was growing back.

Posing Scale: 1 – Our sunny morning turned to this. We were in get down mode, talking and laughing, feeling alive when I saw this scene, stopped, and shot. This is one of my most cherished images, it was the snow that shut down the high trails, but we’d had enough time in the Sierra for Kim to get her legs back. Kim was up and running.
