The Story of the Photo: Climbing the Eiger with Ueli Steck

Climbing the Eiger with Ueli Steck, 2016

I had the good fortune to join Ueli Steck for three Himalayan expeditions. But the real fortune is in my memories of what we did together around our home town of Interlaken. As a close friend and my primary training partner, I tagged along for several ideas he had. In the winter of 2016/2017, he wanted to run to the Eiger from Grindelwald and then climb the West Flank to the summit. After having climbed it a few days before, he knew the conditions were right, and so on New Year’s Eve we set out in the dark morning for Eigergletscher where we’d start up the West Flank.

Getting to climb the Eiger with Ueli and then stand alone on the summit together is one of my greatest memories of our days in the mountains.

Camera: Sony RX100

Posing Scale: 1 – Ueli wasn’t into posing, about the most I could do was ask him to slow down so I could pass and at least get a shot off. This was one of those times.
