The Story of the Photo: Trail Running the Hardergrat

Trail Running the Hardergrat, 2016

This 18km ridgeline cuts across the sky right out our home’s window and is a blatantly obvious line to explore. We discovered the now famous Hardergrat when we first moved to Interlaken in 2012. Where most runs are on trails through the mountains, the Hardergrat is more like a feature that climbers seek on giant rock walls. Sure enough, a trail is worn into its spine. Routes don’t get any more exceptional.

Together with various friends, I did it many times during our first years in Interlaken as a location for my photo work, and to run it as fast as possible for myself. Finally, in 2016, while running it with my friend Brody Leven, I got the shot I was most happy with.

Camera: Sony a6300

Posing Scale: 2 – I knew this spot from previous runs on the Hardergrat and waited behind to let Brody move through the key location. Several passes later I had the exact body language in just the right position.

We’ve done the Hardergrat with lots of different friends, but none so happy to reach sandwiches and ice cream than Brendan “Semi-Rad” Leonard and Hilary Oliver
