The Story of the Photo: Via Valais Patagonia Photo and Film Shoot

Via Valais Patagonia Photo and Film Shoot, 2019

This is a good image with a great story. Patagonia hired us for a week to shoot still photos alongside the team from Sweetgrass Productions (longtime heroes) as they made a film of Clare Gallagher and Luke Nelson running a section of the Via Valais to launch a new trail running kit.

As we got started in early September, about 60-80 cm of snow fell in the high Alps. Shooting summer kit in ski touring conditions was tough but thanks to this cast of characters, we had as much fun as I have ever had on a commercial production. Our entire entourage laughed, told stories, and worked our asses off from Zinal to Randa. In tremendously difficult conditions, thanks to an all star team, it went off perfectly.

In the end, Patagonia was thrilled as our trip jived with what they want to show; keeping the fun going when it’s miserable. And, we landed the first Patagonia catalog cover to feature a trail running image.

Camera: Sony a6500

Posing Scale: 2 –   Luke and Clare knew I was shooting and were in modeling mode, but I got this one off as I was making my way to them for some tight images.
